Camping Zone
Lets go camping!

You can tell that I started off as a Guider by my love of camping and holidays. You just get so much more done on a holidays and most importantly the campers get so much out of it.

This zone will change its ideas on a termly basis. This term I have chosen to focus on a theme for a holiday or camp but it might also include help for leaders over the coming terms. Email me and let me know what you would like to see.

This terms theme is SPACE.

Getting Ready!

SPACE ACEDEMY
Before you set off on camp it is important that your campers prepare, even if they have been away before. Decide on the skills that you think that they need to learn or practice. On a large sheet of paper or card draw a grid. Down the side list all the names of the camper. Across the top the skills or activities i.e. Can pitch a tent as part of a group or Can put a sleepbag back into a stuff sack. When a camper has completed a task give them a gold star. You could even produce a certificate for the campers who gained all their gold stars. This might help you will attendance in the run up to camp.

BLAST OFF!
If you are taking the campers to the holiday home or campsite as a group then why not have a blast off zone. You can then ask them to check in and check their kit. Ask them questions to make sure that they have everything they need. I have a template so email Kanga for it if you want one. Then load your space shuttle (sorry minibus) and the parents can watch you blast off to camp.

CAMPSITE ORGANISATION
If you go mad for themes there are some obvious ideas. Why not name the rooms / tents / work groups after planets. You can also theme your menu to make it sound spacy. Simple things might work like using lots of foil to cover things or hanging job instructions from string like planets.

Possible Activities

SPACE RACE
This night time game should be great fun for older campers (10+) however you need to think of clear rules. Make sure everyone knows where the playing area is. Also make sure that there are 3 campers per team and they stay together. Also each team needs a torch. Have some sort of noise signal so that you can end the game if you need to.

Before the campers can play you need to set up the area. Think of a word that you want to use, this is your answer. The longer the word the longer the game. Say Jupiter, you would need 7 foil pie dishes. On the back of each write a letter. Hang them or attach them around your campsite. Send the teams off in groups to find the dishes, they can do so by flashing their torches. They collect all the letters and re-arrange them to make the code word. If you want you can make the word a place where they have to race to in order to get a prize!

ALIEN TOPS
Every space camp needs an alien. So why not relax and make this easy craft.
You will need per camper:
A pipe cleaner.
Felt in an alien colour.
2 googly eyes.
A 30 cm ruler.
Scissors.
Strong glue or a low-temp glue gun.
A pencil.
Some plasticine.

What to do:
1. Draw around a 30cm ruler on the felt and cut out.
2. At one end of the felt cut it to a point - the head.
3. Sick the pipe cleaner to the felt but leave the pointy end with no pipe cleaner.
4. Using glue wrap and stick the felt so it covers the pipe cleaner.
5. Fold the head down and glue.
6. Stick on the eyes.
7. Bend around the pencil so it looks like it is attached.
7. Stick into the plasticine and let to dry.
8. If you are very crafty use felt and off cuts to add other features.

SPACESHIP YUMMIES!
Even the youngest of campers can make these little treats.

You will need per camper:
A digestive bisuit
A chocolate tea cake
Simple water and icing sugar to make a glue
Various cake decorations, like jellied shapes

What to do:
1. Glue the teacake onto the biscuit using icing.
2. Decorate the spaceship so it has lights etc. Stick on the shapes with icing.
3. Let to set and enjoy with a cool drink.
