Get Started!
There are three main ways you can take part in skipping. There is what I would call short rope, where you twined the rope and jump over it. For this you need a rope that roughly reaches up to your armpits when you are holding it. This page contains songs and rhymes that I would describe for long rope skipping. You need two people to twined the rope and others to jump. The rope length can vary the more people you want skipping at the same time the longer the rope needs to be. I used to use an old washing line but most of them are plastic now and that hurts your legs if you miss. Double Dutch is the third type where you have two ropes in different directions and the skipper jumps in the middle. |
Run Around
Most of the rhymes involve jumping in and out of a long rope. This warm up game called run around will help skippers practice this skill. All the skippers line up and the rope starts to go around. The first skipper runs in and jumps over the rope and out and then around the end to re-join the back of the line. The aim is that the skippers keep coming each time the rope comes around another one jumps in and out. If one misses the rope they are out and the rope restarts for the next skipper. You have to run really fast at the end!

The skipper jumps the rope sining this rhymn and doing the actions at the same time. |
Little Bumper Car
Had a little bumper car, number 49, went around the corner .... (Skipper jumps out and runs around the twinder and rund back in the rope, everyone else keeps holding on the corner until they jump back in) and slams on the brakes. Policeman came and put me in jail. How many days did he put me in jail? (Count until the skipper messes up)

I like coffee, I like tea, I like (person's name) to jump with me. (That person joins the first person so that two are now jumping) One, two, three, change places, seven, eight, nine, change places, etc. (On change places the skippers swop left to right, keep going until they mess up). |

(When the month your birthday is in is called out you run in take one skip and out the other side. To make it harder the caller can mix up the months),
